Spotlight on the Field: Srikanth Vemula

Behind every successful project is an engineer making sure things run smoothly. Recently, we caught up with Staff Engineer, Srikanth Vemula, who is serving as a construction inspector on a bridge deck overlay project near Highway 53 and The Morton Arboretum.

This project involves repairs and overlays on four bridge decks, maintained and managed by IDOT and the construction management team. Srikanth’s role is key to ensuring everything runs smoothly, safely, and to standard.

Q&A with Srikanth on Site!

Can you describe your role and responsibilities on this project?

“Being a construction inspector on the job, I have to be careful about checking in on the people on the job, the safety control—including traffic control—and the material that comes in, as it’s important to know what kind of material or equipment is being used. I also work with the contractor to know what they are doing on that day. When I verify with the standards and say it’s good, then the team is allowed to start. So my responsibility is to make sure the right material gets to the right place.”

What is your favorite thing about being an inspector on this project?

“Talking to a lot of people—most of them are so open! When you have a doubt, they are happy to help you out and explain with real-life examples. That’s the main thing I enjoy. You also talk to a lot of well-experienced people on the job. Not everything is in the books—some things are shared from person to person. Human interaction gives me more experience with the work that’s going on, and that’s something I love to gain on a daily basis.”

From ensuring safety and quality to building knowledge through collaboration, Srikanth truly brings Orion’s EXCEED values to life in the field.
