RESPONSIBILITIES
The Transportation Project Engineer will assist in various tasks, including plan preparation, quantity calculations, geometric design, pavement marking/signing, drainage design, traffic studies, traffic signal design, public involvement, report writing, specifications, cost estimates, roadway lighting, and other related tasks. Candidates with a background in preliminary engineering or development of detailed plans and specifications are recommended. The individual may also be called on to work closely with other teams on multi-disciplinary projects. Activities will vary and can include:
- Analyzes information and data to perform routine design tasks.
- Receives instructions from Project Manager or Senior Project Engineers as to the general results expected.
- Research design options and document findings.
- Responsible as a member of the design team for accuracy of engineering design and plans, quality presentation, thoroughness and follow-through, and efficient conformance to budgets, schedules, and company standards.
- Research code requirements.
- Prepare environmental impact and other administrative reports required for project permits.
- Keeps Project Manager informed of workload and any changes in project schedule, scope or additional services.
- Maintain professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing current professional publications; establishing professional networks; and participating in professional societies.
- Assist or participate in the preparation of project proposals and other business development efforts.
- May be asked to participate in non-design engineering activities such as construction inspection and materials testing, surveying, CADD production, and field data collection.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering or related field with emphasis on highway design, traffic and transportation engineering
- Professional Engineer (PE) Licensure for the State of Illinois required
- Strong written and verbal communication, interpersonal, organizational, and analytical skills
- Minimum 3+ years progressively responsible experience as a Transportation Engineer or similar position
- Demonstrate familiarity with ISTHA/IDOT policies, roadway design and plan preparation, and construction engineering
- Must have experience with MicroStation design software
- Experience with Geopak SS4/3D experience with modeling, cross sections and SUDA a plus
- Qualified candidate must have a good work history and possess a valid driver’s license to use company-owned vehicles to travel to project locations, perform field work, or attend off-property meetings
PAY, PERKS, & BENEFITS

Orion Engineers, PLLC is seeking a Staff Engineer to assist our Construction Management team in delivering engineering services on existing projects and pursue new opportunities. At Orion Engineers, you will have the opportunity to continue to hone your technical skills working on a wide variety of engineering projects while gaining broad exposure to project accounting, client service, marketing, and product and business development.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Working with a dynamic team of engineers on a diverse range of projects, Staff Engineers at Orion assist the Construction team in working closely with clients, other consultants, and technical staff to ensure the successful completion of transportation/roadway-related projects for our clients. Specific tasks could include:
- Conduct on-site observation of work and inspect various work activities to ensure compliance with the contract drawings, all applicable codes, standards, and specifications
- Coordinate material testing, review contractor submittals, requests for information, and coordinate with the contractor
- Coordinate construction activities with clients, inspectors, contractors, and public agencies
- Performs daily field inspections and maintains inspection records
- Measure and document daily construction activities
- Maintain a daily log of construction activities and other job site records
- Monitor progress schedule and maintenance of traffic
QUALIFICATIONS
- 0-4 years of prior experience in Construction Engineering
- Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering/Construction Management from an ABET accredited institution
- Engineer In Training (EIT) Preferred
- Master’s Degree in Construction Management Desirable
- Ability to work independently and take initiative to perform tasks
- Valid Driver’s License with a clean record

Reporting to the VP of Structural Engineering, a Staff Engineer will assist our Structural Engineering team in delivering engineering services on existing projects. As a Staff Engineer at Orion Engineers, you will have the opportunity to work with great leaders of the industry on a wide variety of projects in the transportation engineering and develop your technical skills while gaining broad exposure to client service.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Staff Engineers at Orion assist in various tasks including plan preparation, quantity calculations, structural analysis and design, public involvement, report writing, specifications, cost estimates, construction administration and other related tasks. Candidates with an interest in inspection and assessments, development of detailed plans and specifications, and construction engineering of bridge and building structures are recommended. As an integral member of a collaborative design process with Architects, Engineers and Contractors, professional activities will vary and can include:
- Preparation of design computations, plans, specifications and quantity and cost estimates.
- Conduct bridge inspections and prepare Bridge Condition Reports.
- Use a variety of software and programs for structural analysis and design, and plan preparation.
- Assist on constructability reviews and value engineering reviews.
- Supports the lead on the clients’ project delivery goals and supports the project engineer on issues and obstacles which may compromise or influence the achievement of such goals.
- Delivers high quality project documents and files.
QUALIFICATIONS
- B.S. degree in Civil Engineering with an emphasis on structural engineering required
- M.S. degree in Civil / Structural Engineering preferred
- Engineer in Training (E.I.T) preferred
- Intern experience in structural engineering required
- 2-5 yrs of work experience in a engineering firm preferred
- Strong written and verbal communication skills required
- Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills
- Strong team player in a multi-disciplinary environment who can work on and contribute to several projects simultaneously
