Orion Engineers, PLLC is seeking a Staff Engineer to assist our Construction Engineering team in delivering engineering services on existing projects and pursue new opportunities. At Orion Engineers, you will have the opportunity to continue to hone your technical skills working on a wide variety of engineering projects while gaining broad exposure to project accounting, client service, marketing, and product and business development.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Working with a dynamic team of engineers on a diverse range of projects, Staff Engineers at Orion assist the Construction team in working closely with clients, other consultants, and technical staff to ensure the successful completion of transportation/roadway-related projects for our clients. Specific tasks could include:

  • Conduct on-site observation of work and inspect various work activities to ensure compliance with the contract drawings, all applicable codes, standards, and specifications
  • Coordinate material testing, review contractor submittals, requests for information, and coordinate with the contractor
  • Coordinate construction activities with clients, inspectors, contractors, and public agencies
  • Performs daily field inspections and maintains inspection records
  • Measure and document daily construction activities
  • Maintain a daily log of construction activities and other job site records
  • Monitor progress schedule and maintenance of traffic

 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • 0-4 years of prior experience in Construction Engineering
  • Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering/Construction Management from an ABET accredited institution
    Engineer In Training (EIT) Preferred
  • Master’s Degree in Construction Management Desirable
  • Ability to work independently and take initiative to perform tasks
  • Valid Driver’s License

JOB DESCRIPTION

Reporting to the Vice President of Structural Engineering, a Project Engineer to assist our Structural Engineering team in delivering engineering services on existing projects and pursue new opportunities. As a Project Engineer at Orion Engineers, you will have the opportunity to continue to hone your technical skills working on a wide variety of engineering projects while gaining broad exposure to project accounting, client service, marketing, and product and business development.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Orion’s project engineers assist in various tasks, including plan preparation, quantity calculations, structural analysis and design, public involvement, report writing, specifications, cost estimates, construction administration, and other related tasks. Candidates with a background in inspection and assessments, the development of detailed plans and specifications, and construction engineering of bridges and building structures are recommended. As an integral member of a collaborative design process with Architects, Engineers, and Contractors, professional activities will vary and can include:

  • Responsible for the technical accuracy and competency of structural projects.
  • Signs and seals assigned project documents.
  • Lead the preparation of design computations, plans, specifications, and quantity and cost estimates.
  • Conduct bridge inspections and prepare Bridge Condition Reports.
  • Use a variety of software and programs for structural analysis and design, and plan preparation.
  • Provide constructability reviews and value engineering reviews.
  • Monitors project delivery concerning the contracted scope and fees. Promptly identifies client requested out-of-scope services and works diligently with the client in either securing additional compensation or limiting efforts to contracted scope of work while ensuring the client is aware of limits of negotiated scope.
  • Monitors clients’ project delivery goals and proactively identify issues and obstacles which may compromise or influence the achievement of such goals.
  • Negotiate contracts with clients along with developing scope, fees and schedule.
  • Coordinates with firm leaders to plan and secure the required technical and tangible resources for project delivery.
  • Schedules internal and external project progress meetings with all disciplines and personnel to monitor project progress.
  • Responsible for the organization of project documents and files

 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • B.S. degree in Civil Engineering with an emphasis on structural engineering required.
  • M.S. degree in Civil / Structural Engineering preferred.
  • Active Structural Engineer license in the State of Illinois.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in structural engineering required.
  • NBIS Team Leader certification or willingness to obtain.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills are required.
  • Proven leadership skills with engineering staff and organizations.
  • Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong team player in a multi-disciplinary environment who can work on and contribute to several projects simultaneously.

JOB DESCRIPTION

Operating as a Company Director, the Structural Engineering Lead – Buildings is in direct control of the structural engineering practice for the buildings market, exercising supervision of all personnel in structural engineering professional and technical matters. The Director is, directly and indirectly, responsible for project controls and technical quality, providing senior-level project management oversight on all structural engineering projects for buildings. The Director develops strong working relationships with private clients, government agencies, and other consulting firms and significantly contributes to strategic planning and growing the structural engineering practice throughout the nation.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Lead the coordination, planning, organization, integration, and completion of building projects.
  • Provide technical direction and development on the scope of engineering work, detailed and ongoing schedule input, man-hour requirements, and budgets for the assigned project elements.
  • Communicate with clients to understand and deliver project requirements.
  • Perform analysis and design of new and existing structural systems for various types of buildings and materials.
  • Plan and formulate engineering program and organize project staff according to project requirements.
  • Manage other design team members and supervise the work of engineers.
  • Direct and assist project staff in preparing contract documents, such as drawings and specifications.
  • Review designs, studies, investigations performed by other engineers for conformance to industry standards and requirements
  • Participate in construction support activities, including responses to requests for information (RFIs), submittal reviews, construction site visits, and design revisions/ management of change.
  • Foster a positive collaborative environment between divisions and offices; promote company culture.
  • Participate in proposal presentations, interviews, and business development activities.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering-related field (e.g., civil engineering, construction management, etc.) from an accredited program
  • Structural Engineer (SE) license in Illinois.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in structural engineering, Master’s degree preferred.
  • A minimum of 10 years of experience in the structural design of buildings on a wide variety of structural systems. Experience with new buildings as well as additions, retrofits, and historic masonry preferred.
  • Demonstrate experience in successful project management, client interaction, and staff development.
  • Business development and marketing experience, including writing proposals, scopes of work, and budgets for projected work.
  • Experience working in Revit and using a variety of structural analysis programs.
  • Familiarity with a variety of building and design codes. Experience with the Illinois Capital Development Board is a plus.

  • Analyze information and data to develop design concepts.
  • Research design options and document findings.

  • Research code requirements.

  • Assist with or participate in the preparation of business proposals.
  • May be asked to participate in project site visits or field data collection on an as-needed basis.
  • Effectively communicate to a wide range of professionals, inside and outside the organization.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • 8+ years experience in Phase ll design role.
  • Illinois Professional Engineer (PE) license
  • Understanding of IDOT and IL Tollway standard specifications for road and bridge construction.
  • Experience with ProjectWise, Bentley CONNECT Edition, and/or OpenRoads Designer software
  • Experience developing a Special Provisions Book
  • Full understanding of how heavy highway contracts are written and built
  • Possess strong decision making and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work independently and take the initiative to perform tasks
